Information About Lambda Youth Project
...and history on the Gay Prom

The history of Gay Prom evolved from a one time grant from United Way of Alameda County and monies were targeted for social and recreational activities for LGBT youth. These monies empowered LGBT youth to develop leadership and advocacy skills. Upon completion of a needs assessment a fundraising, empowerment, and community involvement/role modeling event was developed GAY PROM '95 , PRIDE. . .a deeper love.

This pilot event was more successful than originally planned. Over 200 LGBT youth and young adults attended the event and nearly 200 adults implemented, under the direction of the youth, a very spectacular gala evening. This pilot program reached out beyond Northern California. Participants attended from as far away as Calgary, Canada to Austin, Texas. Five newspapers provided front page coverage, including the San Francisco Examiner and the San Jose Mercury News. Further, the prom was carried on the Associated Press wire. Additionally, television and radio coverage were phenomenal. Four television stations and five radio stations presented live and taped interviews.

Gay Prom '96 was an even more spectacular event. The youth chose In the Spirit of Freedom as their slogan for the evening with a decorative theme of New York during the late 20s. This time attendance topped over 200 youth in black tie and vaious regala. Overall it was a safe and secure evening for these youth and young adults where they took their dream dates without harassment or ridicule. Already, local radio station host Ken McPherson of Hibernia Beach on KITS, LIVE 105 is providing weekly air time, technical support with out web site and helping to coordinate live entertainment for Gay Prom '97.Gay Gay Prom '97 promises to be a larger event and the largest production specifically for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered youth and their friends.
