Mission Statement:

Horizon Services, Inc. is a non-profit community based organization
committed to reducing alcohol and other drug related problems within the
community.
-
In order to achieve this, we will provide, educational and therapeutic
services and environments for individuals, families and the community.
-
These supportive services are designed to enhance the quality and productivity
of the lives of all community members, program participants, staff and
volunteers.

Project Eden:
-
Project Eden began in 1967 as a volunteer effort when Dr. Art Bolten,
a pediatrician specializing in adolescents medicine, met with officials
from the Hayward and Castro Valley School Districts to discuss their mutual
concerns about the escalating drug problems of the community's youth.
-
Local PTA's joined in the effort and raised $10,000 in the 1968 Mothers'
March allowing Project Eden to hire it's first paid staff.

For thirty years, Project Eden has provided a wide variety of substance
abuse prevention, intervention, and treatment services to children, adolescents,
adults and families in South Alameda County.

In 1993, Project Eden Became a part of Horizon Services, Inc. which provides
an array of substance abuse programs in the Bay Area.

Youth Services Program:
-
Project Eden's Youth Services Program (YSP)
is a prevention program, striving to keep young people from beginning to
use alcohol and other drugs. YSP counselors offer psycho educational support
groups in the Hayward and San Lorenzo School Districts and at the Community
Day School operated by the Alameda County Office of Education. Students
are referred by faculty, staff, parents or themselves for education and
counseling on issues such as the negative effects of using alcohol and
other drugs, communication skills, conflict resolution, decision making,
goal setting, and anger management. YSP staff also provide crisis intervention,
information and referral, and professional consultation with school staff.

Helping Hands Summer Program:
-
A series of three two week programs offered during
July and August every summer. FREE
for all participants.

Peer counselor training for middle and high school
youth (ages 12-18), addressing issues such as effective communication,
conflicts resolution, negative effects of drugs and alcohol, grief, depression,
sexual abuse, etc......
-
Educational and fun field trips to such sites as
the Exploratorium in San Francisco, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and the
Lawrence Hall of Science.

Youth and Family Counseling:
The Youth and Family Counseling Program provides
outpatient treatment for:
-
Young People who are already using or abusing alcohol
or other drugs.
-
Young people who are exhibiting behavior which puts
them at high risk for abusing alcohol or other drugs.
Assessment:
-
A counselor meets with a teen and his/her family
to determine the nature and degree of the problem.
-
Together a plan will be developed that meets the
unique needs of each family that may include any of the following:
Family Counseling:
-
Rebuilds damaged relationships.
-
Educates the whole family about substance abuse.
-
Helps families establish clear rules and consequences
regarding adolescent behavior.
-
Supports adolescents in finding ways to live a healthy
lifestyle without using alcohol or other drugs.
Individual Counseling:
-
Provides a safe, confidential place for the teen
to establish a trusting relationship with an adult.
-
Helps the young person identify and clarify his/her
own goals and how to go about achieving them.
-
Helps the young person discover better ways to get
along with his/her family.
Group Counseling:
-
Provides a place where teens can meet with their
peers to challenge and support each other in the process of leading healthier,
more productive drug free lives.
Fees:
-
Initial assessment session is FREE
.
-
All other services are provided on a sliding scale.
No one will be refused services due to an inability to pay.
